The life of Picasso

A chance visit to the Picasso museum in Malaga, springs so many suprises. Malaga being his birthplace, it was the place where his ideas were born, probably. The backdrops of never ending, placid oceans flanked by beautiful landscapes, possibly his inspiration.
Tracing his journey through his life, I am awestruck by how it is possible for a human to overcome personal tragedy and come up with something so beautiful, so creative as he did. For , his personal life was beset with love, and Greif , losing his beautiful wife Olga, and then a string of muses whom he obviously adored . But most important of all, the birth of cubism , manifested through various media- paper, paint, even bottles. What is amazing is that, having lived through impoverished times, he came up with the most amazing cubic art that was unheard of until then.
Cubism itself, a juxtaposition of shapes and forms, intrigues the viewer with what might have been behind it. Perhaps the world wars come to mind? Picasso lived through two of them, but transcended the pain and the grief with art and imagination. What would be the best way today to protest against a war? How could you influence the largest number of people? In 1937, Pablo Picasso expressed his outrage against war with Guernica, his enormous mural-sized painting displayed to millions of visitors at the Paris World’s Fair. It has since become the twentieth century’s most powerful indictment against war, a painting that still feels intensely relevant today.
And that was Picasso’s life too- art and beauty transcending all emotions-grief, strife and poverty. That’s the meaning it holds for me too- that joy through art is above all, the purest of emotions, perhaps we humans should give it more of a chance.
